Bawnard House at Castlehyde near Fermoy
Eamon, Thomas and Richard Kent lived in their family home, Bawnard House at Coolroe.
Thomas Kent was on the run and his house, Bawnard House near Fermoy, Co. Cork was surrounded by police.
One police constable, Head-Constable William Rowe was killed in a shoot-out. He is now buried in
Castlehyde
Cemetery, Fermoy.
On the 8th May, 1916, Eamonn Ceannt was executed at Kilmainham Jail.
On the 9th May, 1916, his brother, Thomas Kent was executed at the Cork Military Detention Barracks.
Thomas Kent was buried in the men's prison of Cork Jail which is now part of the campus of University College Cork
and he remains buried in the grounds of UCC to this day.
The Arrest
David, his brother, was sentenced to 20 years and his Mother, who was over 80, was allowed to go free.
The plaque on the Fermoy Bridge says "To the memory of the Kent family who
nobly defended the Irish Republic against the English Army of occupation at Bawnard House Castlehyde on the 2nd
of May (Easter Rising) 1916."
